Before you request quotes

Measure the area, or note the shape if it is irregular.Decide whether dogs use the yard.Note whether the old lawn and sprinklers are still in place.Note whether the yard holds water after rain.Check whether an HOA has to approve the work.

Vetting the installer and the quote

Ask for the licence or registration number and a certificate of insurance.Ask for two local references for the same application type.Require the aggregate named in writing, with the compacted depth.Require the drainage answer: fall, outlet and any channel drain.Require perimeter anchoring and the seam adhesive specified.Confirm what is inside the price: removal, hauling, edge restraint, infill, permit allowance.

The base inspection, before the turf unrolls

The excavation depth matches the contract. The geotextile sits at the bottom of the excavation, under the stone. The aggregate is open-graded, washed and angular. The base is compacted in lifts, not one thick pass. The grade falls away from the house to a visible outlet.Photograph the base and the drainage before the grass goes down.

Before you pay the balance

Seams are flat and the backing is not visible.Edges are restrained and pinned, not just tucked.Infill is brushed in at the specified rate. The surface drains when you test it with a hose. You hold the material warranty and the workmanship warranty in writing.
